John Sundberg - meet the man behind the madness

Some folks paint with brushes. John Sundberg carves with blades. From the shadows of a small island in Finland to the neon-lit edges of the world, he’s been chasing stories, carving dreams, and laughing in the face of reality. His art is the soul of Gutter Sporter – raw, strange, and deeply human.

John Sundberg

John didn’t choose the straight road – hell, he barely stayed on the road at all. He grew up with one foot in reality and the other in dreams. He took his tools, his wild heart, and set out to explore the cracked corners of the world. What he found? The stuff Gutter Sporter lives on – late-night dives into the surreal, smiles shared in flickering streetlights, mornings too hazy to name, and truths that hit harder than a hangover.

Now he carves those moments into wood, presses them into prints, and lets them live again on what you wear. His work isn’t clean, and it sure as hell isn’t polite – but it’s honest. Every line tells a story. Some from this world, some from galaxies we’ve yet to map.

All of them, undeniably, John.

Woodcut Printmaking

Woodcut, or puupiirros as they would say in Finnish, is where art meets muscle. John starts with a solid block of wood – each grain and knot shaping the final piece. He carves straight into it with blades and gouges, cutting away what won’t be seen, leaving only what will hold the ink.

Ink is rolled onto the raised surfaces, thick and black like a bad habit. Then comes the press. Paper meets wood under heavy pressure – sometimes by machine, sometimes just raw force. The result? A bold, textured print that hits different every time. No two are the same.

It’s a craft of precision, patience, and a bit of madness. John's hands know the fight well.
